When Gordon Murray contacts your restoration shop to enquire about a project car, you’d better bring your A-game. Luckily for Retropower, it looks as though A-game is the only game they know. They’ve been tasked with building the Gordon Murray a Mk1 Escort, and are bringing us along for the ride via a video series. The filming has a nice relaxed pace and you have a great opportunity to listen to the thought-process behind the build from all members of the business. Will this be the worlds most sorted and best-built Mk1 Escort when it’s complete?
Whilst doing one of my usual lurking sessions on Retro Rides, I stumbled upon a thread about a Subaru Brumby (Brat). I thought the car looked pretty cool, and then noticed the thread author dropping some links to his YouTube videos. Once I found my way around his channel, I really liked what I saw (or watched). Not only is there the aforementioned Brumby, but there’s also an SVX getting some love in the form of a custom fitted 180SX body kit. Chris’ on-screen persona is really easy to watch, being a likeable young brit who is just giving it a go and getting his hands dirty. I’m really enjoying following his exploits and hope you will too. It’s like someone went and made a channel specifically for us! So far the series has videos detailing how to make a time attack roll cage and a tube frame front end, amongst other various fabrication topics. The complete Part 1 instalment of the tube frame front end video looks to be a paid video, but at over 2 hours long and less than a couple of bucks it sure does appear to be great value for money.
I’m not the biggest Fast & Furious franchise fan. I mean, I liked the first one when it came out, but I was already a car-obsessed teen at that point, so it’s not like it changed my life or started my obsession. I enjoyed the summer vibes of the second instalment, but by the time the third one came around it started to get lost on me, and I didn’t even bother with 4 onwards. But when I heard that Sung Kang had bought his own s30z project to build up, I thought “hey, this is kind of cool!”, a Hollywood actor buying a shitty old Datsun, not too dissimilar to mine, who’ll be building it up just as he wanted. When I noticed the build transformed from a “car guy passion project” into a “Workshop x Media Partner x SEMA” build, I went “okay, this is still kinda cool, but not as cool as it was before”. But I digress! I shouldn’t have let my narrow mind get the better of me before actually watching the start of the series. Once I sat down to view the first video, I realised there really is a hell of a lot of passion being poured into this, from everyone involved, including the owners, the builders, and the creatives putting this series together for us. I’ll be updating this post when each new video comes out, so keep checking back.

Fred is a down to earth guy who hosts his own series videos on the MotorTrend channel, which is why he’s allowed to poke fun at Finnegan and Freiburger (and their newfound viral popularity) whenever he so chooses. In this episode, he starts transforming a PlymouthRoad Runner into a turbodiesel powered off road warrior.
In my never ending quest to replace traditional television with YouTube, I stumbled across this new channel thanks to The Garage Journal forums. It’s called Jimbo’s Garage, and it’s all about, you guessed it, Jimbo’s Garage! Jimbo is the owner of a construction company who has quite the home shop setup going on. His channel has everything from additions and renovations to the garage, tool reviews, and even a little Honda 600 project that he unearths after 10 years in storage. Check it out, you might get some ideas for your own garage, I know I have.
Back in December I made a What I’m Watching post about Jay Leno’s Garage and their projects that were currently in-progress. It was a great opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes at Big Dog Garage, and catch a glimpse of the cars in various states of undress, learning interesting tidbits about them along the way. Well it appears this could be a regular thing, as His Holy Denimness has just released another one of these interesting videos.

Are you just crying out for highly technical videos that explain every tidbit of mechanical symphony? Well then let me introduce you to Hackaweek TV! While there are many projects going on in the Hackaweek stable – including robotics, carpentry and electronics – what I’m most interested in is the CB750 Cafe Racer build. Most of the videos (18 so far) are somewhere between 15 minutes and half an hour, so you’d be wise to grab a hot or cold drink (depending on where you are in the world) and get comfortable while you peruse the playlists.
If you’ve been following my What I’m Watching series since the beginning, you would have already seen me post about Tom’s Turbo Garage once before. Still, I thought I should inform you about his latest project, and one that I’m very excited about, Project Thunderbolt! Tom has bought himself a MazdaspeedNBMX5/Miata and is planning to drop an LS3V8 engine inside. New videos are due to be released every two weeks, and I just know it’ll be as detailed, humourous and of high quality as his other projects.
Yes, I’m biased towards Datsuns (and especially 510s), but what did you expect!? Build Threads Discussion Group member John recently posted up this video that was created about his F20C 510 build. It’s a great piece that gives you an insight into not only the build of the car, but the owner, too, which is always a nice touch.
