4G63 EVO 8-Powered MX5

On this site alone, we’ve seen more than a few different types of MX5 engine swaps, including a 13B turbo, 20B PP, 2x LS3 V8s (here and here), and of course the standard engine converted to turbo (here, here and here) and even supercharged. More often than not, though, it’s the MX5 that becomes the donor vehicle, with many vintage chassis swaps using venerable Miata’s for their drivetrains. This build there, though, is one of the first times I can honestly say I’ve seen something entirely different applied to a Mazda roadster, in the way of a Mitsubishi Evolution 8 engine converted to rear wheel drive. Along with the very interesting engine choice comes a stack of gorgeous home-built fabrication work to set off the rest of the car, transforming it into a formidable track beast.

What I’m Watching: Tom’s Turbo Garage

I’ve been binge-watching this awesome channel lately, and it’s all about the wrenching activity of a very funny and informative gear-head called Tom (although his overalls go by a different name). He has uploaded numerous videos on his various project cars, including a Mazda MX5, Mitsubishi Galant VR4, and a Buick Grand National (all turbocharged, duh!).

Head to Tom’s Turbo Garage to get aquainted with Tom and his little helper, Torch.

1967 Mitsubishi 360

This next project belongs to Build Threads reader, David, who resides in Nagoya, Japan. David decided to restore one of the more obscure cars previously available to the Japanese domestic market, a Mitsubishi 360. After saving it from the clutches of mother nature, he set about restoring the nostalgic kei car one step at a time, but things took a turn for the worse when it was time to give it a fresh coat of paint. After returning home with a substandard paint job, mismatched colour, over-spray, and sections of rust merely hidden under body filler and fiberglass, David made the gut-wrenching decision to tear the car down a second time and have it repainted at a better shop. It all paid off in the end, since he is now the proud owner of one minty-fresh Mitusbishi 360 (with custom iPod connectivity), and not many people can lay claim to that!
