Civic / WRX

A few people have emailed me this build including Leon & also Logan from i put in WORK. I originally wasn’t going to post it because it’s pretty much all over the ‘net already, but then I realised that this is Build Threads and it needs to be here if at least for the sake archiving purposes! So here it is, the car you’ve probably already seen, an EG Civic body sitting on top of a WRX. It’s not pretty, but it does the job.

This is not the first time I’ve featured two cars spliced together, so if you’re a fan of this kind of swap you might also like the following hybrid grafts;

VW Golf MKV Track Build

Another one from Justin, this time it’s a Dubai residing MKV being worked over in track-spec fashion, with two paint jobs plus a custom wide-body conversion – gotta love rear diffusers. Not too many ‘build’ pics at the beginning but it’s still a really sweet ride with plenty of nice photography. 13BT Rotary Chevy Nova

I don’t know if you guys have noticed but I like to feature a bit of everything here, from big dollar to small budget, high power to electric, cheque-book-built to DIY, fabricated to bolt-on, and so on and so on. If I had to put my money on it, I’d say the most popular builds would have to be a combination of the following elements; DIY, engine swaps, and some fabrication thrown in for good measure. This build features all of those plus some wow factor, a ’74 Chevy Nova with a 13B turbo Mazda rotary powering the wheels, submitted via email by Daniel. NA MX5 overhaul

Dan has already had his garage featured here, so it was only fitting that I follow up with what he actually puts in it. Enter the NA MX5, loved the world over and enjoying a second wind of popularity in the current millennium. Dan gives his turbo terror an appearance overhaul DIY style, and it’s great to see that garage being put to use with all the work being done in-house. It looks like some professional photos were being taken for a magazine feature at the time of the last update, so hopefully the thread get’s updated soon with the results of the shoot.

Nostalgic Dragster Rebuild

Chris, a fellow Aussie & VW enthusiast, emailed me this build a while ago. It’s the restoration of a late 60’s/early 70’s front engine dragster being rebuilt at his fathers workshop. Chris tells me that in the drag racing community this is known as a “Cackle Car”, a car which although not competitively raced, is still fully functional. This particular example puts out about 2500hp. Chris’s dad, Ross, was very grateful for the work put in by many people, and had this to say:

There are a number of people that made this restoration happen.
Scotty Lane for going the extra yard with the body work and sump,
Chris Preen for countless machining and fabrication pieces,
Max Preen for his input into chassis repair etc,
Rob Huysmans who did an exceptional job in recreating the original paint scheme.
Rick MacDonald (USA) for all his help with engine and fuel system secrets.
John Huysmans for doing the bulk of the cylinder head work, under instruction from Rick.

And finally the Preen family for putting up with all this madness.

Not only does the car get rebuilt to it’s former glory, but a gokart trailer also gets modified to house it, so there’s some bonus building for you after the jump. Well done to the Preen family for restoring a piece of motor sport history.

SolidWorks Roadster

Finally back to our regular programming. RC submitted this one a while ago, a Factory Five AC Cobra replica built by some of the team at SolidWorks. I love seeing 3D CAD work in some of the more big-dollar builds, so it’s great to see the people behind the software building something for themselves. When I say ‘for themselves’ I should really say ‘by themselves’, as the car will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to charity. Teamwork, a cool car, and a good cause, all that good karma should spare them from any speeding tickets.
