What I love about the modifying game isn’t just the ability to improve on a car’s performance or looks, but those rare people who take it that step further and change the whole purpose of a car. I first laid eyes on this MKIV Golf Estate/Wagon turned ute on Racer86.com within some event coverage. After asking some VW friends from StanceWorks Australia about it, they brought the 1552 wheels to my attention. After a bit of digging around using some keywords I finally unearthed exactly what I was looking for, a build thread on UKMKIVs. Gotta love the wonders of the internet and what you can uncover if you try. Now I’m having bad ideas for my own MKIV, where did I leave my angle grinder?…

VW Fox ute conversion
Take one VW Fox 2-door wagon, wield your choice of cutting utensil around some structural pieces of metal rearward of the B pillar, mix in a bit of hard work and welding, and you end up with your very own US version of a VW Saveiro. That’s exactly what Shawn did, and he was nice enough to shoot me a link to his build thread to share with everyone. One thing is for certain, all the custom fabrication work wasn’t done so it could sit pretty and hardpark it’s whole life, this little truck was built to work!

R33 Skyline Ute
You most likely saw the finished product featured on Speedhunters last week, but have you seen the build of the R33 ute? Check after the jump for the link. If that isn’t enough sportscar-to-ute conversion action for you, then you can check out these previous features:
– Truckasaurus RX7
– BMW M5 ute
BMW M5 Ute
Cereal submitted this build to me, but it’s something I saw years ago while reading Street Machine Magazine when the car was still a concept. It belongs to professional Aussie golfer Stuart Appleby, and it shows what happens when you’re a BMW nut with a whole lot of disposable income. An M5 sedan is given the ute/pickup treatment to fit some golf clubs in the back, with all the body work being fabricated the old school way, in metal.
Truckasaurus FC RX7 Pickup
Japanese hatches such as the FC RX7 and S13 180SX make great candidates for pickup conversions, as we’ve seen before in Japan with a few drift cars getting the chop.
Earl has created his own spin on the concept with this 2nd Gen RX7, come and see it get built and continually evolve.
