Project Hoonda – Turbo CBR900RR [video build]

If you’ve been a reader of Build Threads since the beginning, then you might remember the BladeRod feature from back in 2009. It’s owner, Mark, the man behind the very entertaining automotive YouTube channel, HoonTV, is a bit of a CBR900 nutter, as he explains in detail in this video. One of the bikes from his fleet of CBR’s is this ’98 model currently in the build at Extreme Creations. Being built in a Street Fighter style it features a heap of custom parts such as a half machined/ half hand-formed plenum, an Aprilia swing arm, billet wheels, oh and did I mention the Garret T28 turbocharger?

LX Torana GTR

If you’re an Aussie, like I am, then you’d be well versed in the Holden vs Ford debate, even if you don’t fancy either marquee, it’s an argument with no expiry date. Almost as well known as this red and blue rivalry is the tale of the Nissan Skyline GTR dominating the touring car races of the early 90’s, a story regularly re-told by many a Skyline owner with a smirk on their face. It’s fair to say the Skyline was not liked by Holden and Ford fans of that era. So what do we make of this, then? A Holden LX Torana fitted with an R32 Skyline GTR engine and AWD system. Two ex-Bathurst legends which would have been fierce rivals on ‘The Mountain’ were it not for the age gap, now combined into one machine. Personally, I love it, and I thank you for following that very drawn-out intro that possibly makes little sense at all.

1960 Aston Martin DB4GT ZAGATO

Well here’s another first, a car featured on Ebay, of all places. This isn’t a build thread as such, but there are some great behind the scenes build images of this gorgeous Aston Martin that I thought would be a shame to lose when the auction is over. I have re-posted all of the text and images in the post below. Sadly, the $2.4mil USD asking price is just sliiiightly out of my range.

Mustegra – DC2 Integra / 96 Mustang

This build doesn’t start off with a bare shell, a neglected car found under a tree, or even anything remotely standard, it actually starts off with a Honda Integra that had already been featured in a magazine. So how can a build start off with an already complete car? Well, because the guts of the Honda gets removed and fitted atop a ’96 Mustang Cobra, creating a V8, RWD Integra. The interesting thing to note is that the owners inspiration for this build was actually the Civette, another Honda chassis swap that graced these pages.

MKIV Golf Ute/Pickup conversion

What I love about the modifying game isn’t just the ability to improve on a car’s performance or looks, but those rare people who take it that step further and change the whole purpose of a car. I first laid eyes on this MKIV Golf Estate/Wagon turned ute on Racer86.com within some event coverage. After asking some VW friends from StanceWorks Australia about it, they brought the 1552 wheels to my attention. After a bit of digging around using some keywords I finally unearthed exactly what I was looking for, a build thread on UKMKIVs. Gotta love the wonders of the internet and what you can uncover if you try. Now I’m having bad ideas for my own MKIV, where did I leave my angle grinder?…

Mini Clubman Estate

After featuring a few big-time builds in a row, I thought it was time we get back into a regular car-guy’s project. I’ve been following this thread on and off for a while, and it’s been nothing short of a weld-a-thon and a true exercise in DIY modifying. For someone like me who has recently picked up the MIG welder, it’s been a priceless source of information and inspiration. Each modification is tackled individually, broken down into basic shapes and processes, making it very easy to follow and learn from.

’69 Chevelle / ’99 Nascar chassis

What better way to update your classic Chevelle than by sliding a modern Nascar chassis underneath it? Sounds easy, right? Well for some people it is, like Doug, who set out to create his ultimate ’69 Chevelle after never quite getting over the loss of his first one back in the mid 80’s. The fond memories of a first car seem to always stick with us, no matter what the make or model.

Nissan GTR x Qashqai/Dualis

The Ferrari F40 LM Restoration was always going to be a hard act to follow, so you can imagine my dilemma in trying to find something suitable for the next post. In the end, I didn’t have to look very far, because the build came to me!

Henri just emailed me this very interesting project, a brand spanking new Nissan Qashqai/Dualis, stripped down to it’s undies with it’s floorpan cut out, dropped over a diced up R35 GTR, creating one very fast compact SUV. Well, actually, the company behind the build, SVM, is building two of these monsters, a 550BHP white one, and a Kuro Black model pushing out 900BHP, but this build focuses on the white one.

Ferrari F40 LM Restoration Part 1

Could this be the holy grail? The best car ever featured on Build-Threads.com? For those of you who are keen followers of the Facebook page, you’d be well aware that I’m quite the Ferrari tragic, and that as far as supercars go, I’d have a hard time deciding between an F40 or a Lamborghini Miura (if the opportunity ever happened to arise). I’m that much of a tragic, in fact, that I signed up to Ferrari Chat a long time ago just so I could view images that are restricted to members. This build comes from that very forum, but I’m not about to make you sign up to view it. Instead, I have personally asked the owner of this car, Tim, for his permission to re-post the entire thread on these very pages, and thankfully he said yes. I think this build is so incredible that it should be shared with a greater audience, so I’d like to thank Tim for allowing me to post it here.

This F40 is listed as Chassis No 84326, and was rotting away in a garage for 8 years before Tim snapped it up and sought about having it brought back to better than it’s former glory. This isn’t a made-for-TV hack job, this is a no-expense-spared restoration of one of the greatest supercars of all time. I’m so used to seeing F40’s in their finished guise, carefully polished with gleaming paintwork, but to see one in various states of undress has given me a whole new appreciation for both the shape and the engineering behind it. I hope you enjoy this build as much as I have…
