Taz goes to Stuttgart

Taz Ali recently ventured to the Porsche Museum in Germany and indulged in the automotive delights on offer. If you remember my previous post featuring Taz’s photography from his visit to Techno Classica Essen 2010, you know to expect nothing but quality. Head to Taz’s blog, or view the full set of images on his Flikr.

Fiat 850

I’m posting this for the simple reason that I love these little cars. Always having been a fan of the Fiat 500, it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I saw one of these slightly larger models on Speedhunters while browsing through their Cars & Coffee coverage from late August. Since then, I’ve been obsessed with the little Italian sedans, and they have a prominent place very high up on my wish-list.

During my routine browsing on the Retro Rides forum, I was excited find this build along my travels. Lots of great DIY in this one, including a turbo conversion and some liberal use of motorbike parts.

1959 Ford Thames / BMW 2002

Here’s another build to go with the other chassis-swap projects that have been previously featured. This time it’s a 1959 Ford Thames van being sat on top of a shortened BMW 2002 chassis, built by it’s owner, Mike Pugh. Kindly submitted by Mikael.

So, after featuring a handful of projects like this, it begs the question; what would your ultimate chassis-swap project be?

FreedomBird

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a feel-good story, so here’s one that Ty emailed me about his very own pride and joy.

Ty is in his early 40’s and has been a serving member of the US Air Force for over 25 years. He sent off his first ever car, a 1971 Firebird, for quick paint job but things didn’t go exactly as planned. The ‘Bird ended up in “paint jail” at a panel shop for over 14 weeks, so he enlisted the great guys at Fletcher’s Customs to rescue the car and carry out the remaining work. Like most of us, Ty had a set budget to work within, but Chad Fletcher and his crew knew the car needed to be finished to a much higher standard than the money would allow, especially considering it was going to be returned to someone who has been serving their country. So with that in mind, Chad set about to drum up support from a number of companies and individuals who donated various parts and services, and the car went on to become a full-fledged Pro-Touring masterpiece, concluding with a spot at SEMA and an appearance on the television show PowerBlock .

Koenigsegg Granada update

Anyone remember the Koenigsegg Granada? Well Joel, the owner, contacted me after noticing his car was featured on Build Threads and filled me in on some details about the car. Apart from giving me a link to his proper build thread, Joel also schooled me on some Koenigsegg/Ford facts.

Apparently, all engine parts on the Koenigsegg are based on – and interchangeable with – the Ford 4.6 modular family, a fact that the boys over in Sweden aren’t too keen on telling people. A new block is cast in England for the Swedish supercars, allowing them call it an “in-house design”. Interesting!

The car has been developed further since it’s previous feature, so if you want to read the Granada build thread, click here.

VIP Previa

Back from Japan and back to reality, and what better way to kick things off than with a very Japanese styled build (even though it resides in America). I’ve had my eye on this Previa build since I first saw it on Stanceworks, and I can definitely say it’s come together in the end to be a very special and unique car. It’s great to see people straying away from the norm and succeeding.
