Subaru Impreza 5.0 RWD

Let’s take it waaaay back to the start of 2011 (that’s over four and half years ago, wow!). That’s when, at the end of my Speedhunters guest post, I posted a teaser image of an upcoming build. That image was a GC Impreza with an SR20 sitting neatly between the strut towers. Rob is the owner of that car, and he and I have been in contact since well before then, waiting for the perfect moment to feature his car. Well, things change, like engine swap choices, and that same Impreza now finds itself with double the cylinders and 100% less turbochargers. It’s been a long road for Rob and his Subaru, but the time is finally here to share his build with the rest of the world.

What I’m Watching: The Fabricator channel

It’s like someone went and made a channel specifically for us! So far the series has videos detailing how to make a time attack roll cage and a tube frame front end, amongst other various fabrication topics. The complete Part 1 instalment of the tube frame front end video looks to be a paid video, but at over 2 hours long and less than a couple of bucks it sure does appear to be great value for money.

Pro Pontiac Pro-Touring Firebird

This build has been sitting in my drafts folder for two years, TWO WHOLE YEARS! I’m always fighting with myself over posting builds before they’re complete, but this one is just too good to sit on, so I figured it was finally time (plus I like posting follow-ups on popular builds as they evolve). This pro-touring Pontiac Firebird resides in Sweden, and is being transformed with great attention to detail and craftsmanship during a love affair spanning 16 years. There’s plenty of fabrication and CAD design to keep you more than entertained, from big suspension components to the smallest detailed bracketry, and the photos are all top notch. Apart from the build thread you can also follow this extremely thorough project on it’s dedicated Facebook page, which you’ll find at the bottom of the post.

Honda N600 – VFR800 swap!

This build came to my attention via it’s eBay auction, of all places. A friend linked it to me and within the description was a build thread link. Now who of us here would be stupid enough to NOT click that link? What I found was an obscure little 70’s Honda whose body shape I was not familiar with. Reading a little further into it, I was delighted to see fabricated parts, various body modifications, a motorbike engine conversion and a narrowed Mazda Miata/MX5 rear end to top it off (there’s also a funky transmission setup that goes way over my head, so I’ll let you read about it yourself). It’s been a while since I’ve featured something bike powered, and this just might be the best one yet.

Triumph GT6 with Jaguar V12 power

Here’s some real home-grown fabrication for you. A V12 converted to twin 4-barrel carbs, shortened Jaguar rear end, BMW front end, endless amounts of body work, chassis fabrication, flat floor and wooden bucks to custom make sheet-metal panels. This is backyard ingenuity at it’s best. Edit: I should probably mention that the thread is over 350 pages long, so yeah, have fun with that!

Lotus Europa barn find restoration

I have this list of attainable vintage sports cars that I like to think I’ll be able to buy as mid-life crisis project, and the Lotus Europa is firmly planted on that list. Every time I see an article or post about these cars, I can’t help but read every word and obsess over every picture. But the owner of this particular Lotus, Serge, is no where near middle age. In fact he’s still a dental student, yet he’s attacking this restoration from the ground up all on his own. His Europa is a special one, being the oldest chassis in existence (Chassis number 2 – #460002) that he’s slowly restoring back to as-new condition. Serge not only documents the whole process on his blog, but also starts a YouTube channel with periodic videos of the work he does. These videos are some of the most informative that I’ve ever seen, he really goes into full detail about what he’s doing, how he’s doing it, and why he’s doing it.

Vauxhall-powered Turbo Mini

Can’t wait for your Project Binky fix? Well it’s not the only Mini build out there! A talented chap emailed me his build at the start of the year, and I’ve only just had a chance to have a proper read of it, and boy am I feeling stupid for waiting so long! The car is purchased with a 2.0L Vauxhall motor already swapped into it (which is quite large for a car this size), with a plan for a quick tidy up that soon spirals into a full build. While the car is in pieces, he decides to add a turbo, because, why not? Apart from the quality home-built fabrication (like the tube front subframe with pushrod suspension) and wiring that goes on, the car also goes on an intricate diet, with grams shaved from parts wherever possible. This is going to be one fast little Mini when it’s completed, so keep your eyes peeled for updates in the near future.

MK1 VW Caddy R32 4-Motion

Things have been quieter than usual around here and on Facebook/Twitter lately, and while I do apologise for that, I promise I have a good reason! My wife and I welcomed our first child into the world just over a week ago, so things have been understandably busy at home. But believe me when I say that in the back of my mind I was always thinking about the site and how you guys would be hanging for a new build! So, here we go. This car has been on my radar for a while, a great example of a home-built concoction, all fabricated by the owner, mixing a MK1 Volkswagen Caddy body with a MKIV Bora 4-motion V6 AWD driveline, and plenty of welding to stick it all together.

RAMPAGE – 2nd Gen Camaro

Have you heard of the Rampage Camaro? Of course you have, it was arguably the biggest hit of SEMA 2014; a second generation Camaro with a full slathering of motorsport technology and fabrication bestowed onto it by the wizards at Roadster Shop. And what’s better than seeing pictures of a glossy finished car shining under stadium lights? Pictures of that same car in bare metal with little to no panels bolted to it! I actually found this build through another featured build. I was browsing for updates on the red MKII Supra (whose owner works at Roadster Shop), when I saw him post a link to this build within his own thread. See, it always pays to look through the archives, you never know what you’ll find! I honestly had a lot of trouble figuring out which pictures to use for this post, as I found myself wanting to save pretty much every damn image from the thread, so I hope you enjoy the visual banquet that is this build as much as I did. It might not be achievable for most of us, but it’s nice to dream and peek into the upper echelon of car building once in a while. Who knows, you might find an idea or two for your own build?

Peugeot 106 hillclimb home-build

You know the drill, what starts off as a quick bit of rust repair turns into a full bare-shell rotisserie build. Not that we’re complaining, right?! This little Pug receives a lot of love from it’s owner, and his welder. Roll cage, suspension, machining, bike carbs, wiring; this build has it all. Most importantly, it just recently came back to life after a 2-year hiatus, so let’s hope the updates will be arriving thick and fast from now on.
