Citroen Saxo Super 1600

Every now and then I get a bit of a “wow” moment when a build finds it’s way to my inbox, and this rally car restoration is definitely one of those moments. The thread first takes you through the competition history of the car, before we begin the build with a very tired and damaged shell. With a donor car brought in for parts and panels we get taken along for the ride as years of automotive archeology are uncovered with every layer of paint sanded and spot weld drilled out. The owner/builder shows off his skills in everything from body work, fabrication, painting and composites. The car doesn’t look to be finished just yet but the thread is up to date.

Subaru Leone EJ22T AWD

Sure, you could buy yourself an STi Impreza, but where’s the fun in that? What about taking an all original, low-milage 1986 Subaru Leone, converted to AWD thanks to an XT6 (Vortex) donor, with an engine consisting of a built EJ22T bottom end and STi Version 8 Type RA heads? Yeah, I’d choose the Leone too. The initial build is done and dusted quite quickly, but the car continues to evolve throughout the thread. Unfortunately it meets a guard rail towards the end, but is thankfully repaired swiftly and with OEM parts back to better than new condition.

Makela Ferrari 308 GTB Group 4

If you haven’t heard of Makela Auto Tuning before, allow me the honour of introducing you to the Finnish gods of auto restoration. They specialise in ex-Works rally and race cars, and like to document their work in galleries with hundreds (if not thousands!) of images. This isn’t the first time I’ve featured their work, you can read about a bunch of their projects by clicking here. Since it’s been a while between drinks, I thought I’d show you this fantastic restoration of a Ferrari 308 GTB rally car. Oh, there’s only 1764 images of the build. Yes, you read that right, over ONE THOUSAND images.

Exclusive look: Peasnell Racing Designs

I know for the most part that Build-Threads.com is kind of a one-way thing. I post, you read, that type of deal. But the truth is that I love hearing from readers via email, Twitter, the Facebook page, and the new Facebook Discussion Group. Whilst everyone’s projects can’t be featured, I still love seeing what people are up to. Most of the time it’s regular guys like myself, tinkering away at their project in the garage, but every now and then something far beyond the reaches of us common folk greets me. Just the other day, Lewis from Peasnell Racing Designs sent me a Facebook message with a few images of his work, letting me know very politely that he’d love to see his work on the site if I ever had a ‘slow news day’. What I saw left me gobsmacked, and I couldn’t wait to share it with everyone and hopefully give Lewis a platform for his work via this humble website. Before we start salivating over the fabrication and design, I’ll leave you with this quote from Lewis to remind us that, although his work might be otherworldly, deep down he’s just a normal guy like you and me…

“Growing up I loved LEGO and drawing, this is just my grown up version, I’m sure.”

BUILT from eBay [video build x4]

So, I’ve become a bit of a YouTube junky lately. My almost nightly ritual consists of plonking myself down on the couch with a hot coffee, firing up the iPad, plugging in my over-ear headphones, and catching up on all of my favourite subscriptions. Some of those include /DRIVE, HoonTV, Jay Leno’s Garage, Marchettino, Mighty Car Mods, Motor Trend (Roadkill and Dirt Every Day), and of course Petrolicious. For too long I imagined YouTube’s sole existence catered to wannabe celebrities uploading videos of themselves doing something stupid in the hope of going viral. Now I’m more than aware that it’s become quite the replacement for television, with professionally produced channels releasing regular content aimed at specific demographics, making their viewers crave new content just like you would for Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones.

It was during a browsing session that I stumbled across a 10-part series called “BUILT from eBay”, which chronicled the process of four different shops (aligned with 4 different magazines) building four different cars using parts bought only from eBay. While the concept is pretty transparent as being one big commercial, the content is quite entertaining. Hell, you get to see four completely different cars being built without having to read a single word, what’s there to complain about?

’91 Subaru Legacy RS Type RA

While this build itself is very impressive and highly detailed, it’s the other automotive work that the owner partakes in that will really pique your interest. His car of choice is a 1991 Subaru Legacy RS, a love affair that started while serving an apprenticeship with Subaru, working on race and rally cars for Possum Bourne in New Zealand. This chassis started life as a Legacy Sport, but is now on it’s way to becoming an RS Type RA thanks to a ground-up rebuild and a selection of high-end additions. As for his other work? Well, let’s just say his duties include rebuilding Formula 1 cars, IndyCars, IMSA racers, and exotic road/race cars, so you know his personal car is going to be of a very high caliber. AWD Ford Fiesta Cosworth

It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these completely bonkers builds. You know the type; pedestrian fwd hatch, completely gutted, filled with a skeleton of tubing, a north/south facing engine conversion, race-quality suspension and a change of driveline orientation? Yeah, one of those! While I could make up some story about how this car changed my life and waffle on for 1000 words about it, you know I leave that fluffy stuff up to the other blogs, so here’s the stats: MK6 Fiesta, formerly turbo diesel, now Cosworth powered all wheel drive, JWRC wide body kit, WRC rear cradle, full cage and tube front and rear ends, and heaps more. I think the pictures will speak for themselves, enjoy!

Diesel GC8 Subaru WRX

Talk about thinking outside the square. If you bought yourself a dead-stock GC8 Subaru Impreza to attack Pikes Peak, what engine choice would you go for? A single turbo EJ20 as found in the WRX? Or maybe the twin turbo version from a JDM Legacy? Perhaps you’d be more inclined to go for the bigger capacity 2.5 EJ25 from the later model Impreza? Or, if you wanted to be really different, you could step up to the EZ30 or EZ36 flat 6 engines?

Well not Gregoire, he went for a flat four Subaru engine that I didn’t even know existed, it’s called an EE20 and it’s diesel powered! Rolling coal in what looks to most people like a 22B? Yeah, that’s very cool! Don’t forget to check out the build summary video at the bottom of the post.

Lancia Delta Evo1 – Part 2(JZ)

Remember this Lancia Delta I featured back in November 2009? No? Well, that’s okay, because I didn’t either! The build was submitted to me very recently, so after assessing it I started the usual process of putting the post together. It actually took me about 10 or so pages before the build started to look familiar. So why am I featuring it again? Because the car gets a full overhaul and is now a completely different beast compared to a few years ago. You’ll probably see pictures of it on the track on Speedhunters within their 2013 Gatebil coverage, so it seems as good a time as ever to share the build with you.
