Makela Ferrari 308 GTB Group 4

If you haven’t heard of Makela Auto Tuning before, allow me the honour of introducing you to the Finnish gods of auto restoration. They specialise in ex-Works rally and race cars, and like to document their work in galleries with hundreds (if not thousands!) of images. This isn’t the first time I’ve featured their work, you can read about a bunch of their projects by clicking here. Since it’s been a while between drinks, I thought I’d show you this fantastic restoration of a Ferrari 308 GTB rally car. Oh, there’s only 1764 images of the build. Yes, you read that right, over ONE THOUSAND images.

The world of Sakurama

Since building my own garage, I’ve been hanging around The Garage Journal a lot more, which has made me re-discover some threads that I had breezed over back when I was a casual visitor. Amongst all the amazing (and huge!) garages on the forum, I became reacquainted with a great thread that showcased not only a garage, but the renovation of the whole architect-designed mid-century home attached to it. I made myself sit down and read it from start to finish, taking in all of the gorgeous photography (did I mention the owner is a photographer?), various materials, construction techniques and bespoke joinery. As the page count increased, I realised that apart from the renovation of the gorgeous home and garage, the thread is also peppered with links to Gregor’s other passion, restoring and modifying motorbikes. For this reason I decided to make this post a builder spotlight, where you’ll find links to all of the visually delightful projects at the bottom of the page.

Project Ugly Horse

Another Mustang?! Well, yes, but this one’s a little different. Actually, it’s a lot different, because there’s no bent-8 to be seen in the propulsion department. Project Ugly Horse is a build I’ve stumbled across more than once, and found myself re-visiting it enough times that I realised I should probably put it up on the site.  The project started off on AutoBlog and then continues over at Road & Track, but don’t worry, all the necessary links are at the bottom of the post. Not only is this an interesting project on a wrenching level, but I found the most enjoyable part to be the exceptional writing, it’s very entertaining.

Ferrari F40 LM Restoration Part 5

We’re pretty much at the business-end of the F40 LM restoration now. The body is buttoned up, fuel is flowing through the lines, and the turbos are spooling. Click below to see it take shape, including a couple of videos and a sneak peek at an EVO Magazine photoshoot. We are now up to date with the actual build thread on Ferrari Chat. At a guess I’d say updates from here on out will be evolution of the car in it’s final state, but I’ll be sure to make another post when the updates add up.

’95 Mustang OCD Machine

There’s a twisted tale that goes along with the feature of this car. Dan, the owner, bought a Build Threads sticker pack when I was offering sketches with every order (NLA!). Once I found his car online to use as a reference for the sketch, I really liked what I saw and thought everyone else would, too. It was only after clicking through a few pages that I realised I had actually shared pictures of his oval-exhaust build technique on the Build Threads Discussion Group earlier in the year. Funny how things work. The journey of this thread begins with a car that’s already been deemed magazine-worthy, but that doesn’t stop Dan from continuing development on the ‘stang. The big-on-detail thread begins with an IRS swap and fitment of a pro-charger, then continues along with airride, oval exhaust with cutouts, sound system, interior, and much more. It’s far from over, so be sure to add it to your bookmarks and check up on the sharply photographed progress in the future.

J-ROD ’67 Chevy Nova

Every time I hear “Chevy Nova”, all I can think of is “I remember you used to drive that crappy blue Chevy Nova. What are you driving now?”…”Same crappy blue Chevy Nova”. Now, if you’re a bit younger than me, you might need to look that one up! The Nova in this feature is not blue, and DEFINITELY not crappy. What it is, is a high calibre pro-touring build that started out as a quick re-paint, but quickly snowballed into a full SEMA award winning build.

Mazzarini RT V6 – Custom Car Build

I feel as though I’ve been moving away from the original intentions of this website, and that is linking you to interesting builds from around the world. What I mean by that is, I think the site-hosted builds like the Ferrari F40, Honda City Turbo II, EG Civic/S15 Silvia, and my own garage build have distracted me from posting those unique threads from various forums. Not that those builds aren’t interesting – and they’re a hell of a lot more work for me to set up – it’s just that this site was built on finding and sharing builds from external forums. So here we go, back into the swing of things with a completely custom built car from Sweden. The fiberglass body is influenced by 1970’s race cars like the GT40 and Lola, with a 3.2L Alfa Romeo V6 for motivation. Thanks to HÃ¥kan for submitting, this is his own build.

Ferrari F40 LM Restoration Part 4

Part 4 of the drool-enducing F40 LM restoration is here, and we are so, so close to seeing it that sweet twin turbo V8 being brought to life. I’m trying to update this thread more regularly than I used to, so hopefully I can get part 5 done in the not too distant future.

EG Civic / S15 Silvia – Buttoning things up

We’re already up to Part 5 of the Impossible Fabrications / Nulon EG Civic build. In this installment we start at the back of the car to see the rear suspension framework finalised, and an alloy fuel tank fabricated. Then we work our way along the tailshaft and custom transmission tunnel, before heading to the front of the car where the bay is resprayed and the engine re-fitted. It’s almost time for SR20DET  RWD Civic burnouts!
