What I’m Watching: You drive the Pagani Huayra

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I’ve really gotten into YouTube lately, so I figured I might as well share all the stuff that keeps me from being more productive I view in moderation. I’ve decided to start a new post topic called What I’m Watching, which will show what I’m currently viewing. Videos that, while always automotive related, may or may not be build-oriented, and hopefully something to keep you entertained between build posts. To kick it off, here’s a video that I’ve watched numerous times, I just keep coming back to it to hear the sweet induction noise of the new Pagani without any fluffy visual effects or soundtracks to ruin it. Project Honda City Turbo II – Introduction

A couple of friends of mine (the same guys I went to Winton with) have embarked on a joint project car. The car in question is an obscure little Honda, and it’s not a Civic. Nope, it’s even better, it’s a City Turbo II. If you’re unfamiliar with these awesome little cars, you can read up about them on the Wiki page here. All you really need to know is that it’s small, it’s turbo, and you can fit a Motocompo in the boot. The other night I popped around for a visit while Tony and Ryan were wrenching away and took some photos of the goings on. As usual, click for larger versions.

’91 Subaru Legacy RS Type RA

While this build itself is very impressive and highly detailed, it’s the other automotive work that the owner partakes in that will really pique your interest. His car of choice is a 1991 Subaru Legacy RS, a love affair that started while serving an apprenticeship with Subaru, working on race and rally cars for Possum Bourne in New Zealand. This chassis started life as a Legacy Sport, but is now on it’s way to becoming an RS Type RA thanks to a ground-up rebuild and a selection of high-end additions. As for his other work? Well, let’s just say his duties include rebuilding Formula 1 cars, IndyCars, IMSA racers, and exotic road/race cars, so you know his personal car is going to be of a very high caliber. AWD Ford Fiesta Cosworth

It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these completely bonkers builds. You know the type; pedestrian fwd hatch, completely gutted, filled with a skeleton of tubing, a north/south facing engine conversion, race-quality suspension and a change of driveline orientation? Yeah, one of those! While I could make up some story about how this car changed my life and waffle on for 1000 words about it, you know I leave that fluffy stuff up to the other blogs, so here’s the stats: MK6 Fiesta, formerly turbo diesel, now Cosworth powered all wheel drive, JWRC wide body kit, WRC rear cradle, full cage and tube front and rear ends, and heaps more. I think the pictures will speak for themselves, enjoy!

Fun fact: This is the 5th time I’ve used the word ‘bonkers‘ to describe a car (yes, I checked). Click here for more Ford builds.

NA MX5 nut-and-bolt OCD rebuild

Imagine for a second that you just bought a car, but that car was located 1800 miles away, meaning you had to travel that distance to collect the car, and then drive it all the way back home. Now, keep your imagination going, and ponder how you’d feel if that same car got stolen from your driveway less than one week after you bought it. Pretty shattering, right? Well, what if it wasn’t just stolen, but also crashed, flipped, and completely totaled by the theif? I think I’d curl up in a ball and just cry. But not Jeff, the owner of this turbo’d Mazda Miata/MX5. After taking a week to grieve, he sought about buying a replacement car and rebuilding it piece by piece, ensuring no dirty or unpainted/polished product so much as touches the car. It culminates in one of the cleanest MX5’s on the planet, better than when it rolled off the production line.

Audi S1 V8 TT

Does anyone build normal retro Audi’s? Or are they all completely bonkers? For a car company that emits a rather subdued tone, churning out understated luxury cars with a few sports models in between, their fan-base sure do like to turn up the wick on their own 4-ringed vehicles. This S1 comes courtesy of Dave at EPS Motorsport, an Australian living in the UK, who saw fit to put his Quattro atop a a space frame chassis, with early Formula 1 control arms, composite body panels, and a twin turbo V8 thrown in for good measure.

1UZFE 1986 MKII Supra

What can I say about builds like these? High quality mods, high quality images, and high quality documentation, everything we all love in a thread, steered by my favourite kind of builder; one with OCD! Another thing I love about this particular build is watching the owner’s skills progress and improve as time goes on. The choice of car is something we haven’t seen on the site before, we’ve had Supra’s, but never a MKII, so it’s refreshing to read about a platform that can sometimes go unnoticed within the nostalgic Japanese community. There’s so much quality here, from fiberglassing, wiring, welding and CAD design – and over 50 pages of it – so get comfortable!

Project Hoonda – Turbo CBR900RR [video build]

If you’ve been a reader of Build Threads since the beginning, then you might remember the BladeRod feature from back in 2009. It’s owner, Mark, the man behind the very entertaining automotive YouTube channel, HoonTV, is a bit of a CBR900 nutter, as he explains in detail in this video. One of the bikes from his fleet of CBR’s is this ’98 model currently in the build at Extreme Creations. Being built in a Street Fighter style it features a heap of custom parts such as a half machined/ half hand-formed plenum, an Aprilia swing arm, billet wheels, oh and did I mention the Garret T28 turbocharger?

Ferrari F40 LM Restoration Part 1

Could this be the holy grail? The best car ever featured on Build-Threads.com? For those of you who are keen followers of the Facebook page, you’d be well aware that I’m quite the Ferrari tragic, and that as far as supercars go, I’d have a hard time deciding between an F40 or a Lamborghini Miura (if the opportunity ever happened to arise). I’m that much of a tragic, in fact, that I signed up to Ferrari Chat a long time ago just so I could view images that are restricted to members. This build comes from that very forum, but I’m not about to make you sign up to view it. Instead, I have personally asked the owner of this car, Tim, for his permission to re-post the entire thread on these very pages, and thankfully he said yes. I think this build is so incredible that it should be shared with a greater audience, so I’d like to thank Tim for allowing me to post it here.

This F40 is listed as Chassis No 84326, and was rotting away in a garage for 8 years before Tim snapped it up and sought about having it brought back to better than it’s former glory. This isn’t a made-for-TV hack job, this is a no-expense-spared restoration of one of the greatest supercars of all time. I’m so used to seeing F40’s in their finished guise, carefully polished with gleaming paintwork, but to see one in various states of undress has given me a whole new appreciation for both the shape and the engineering behind it.
