Ford Super Duty F350

Big-body truck builds interest me because it’s not something we see much of here in Australia. Our most popular trucks are what would be considered medium sized in the US, such as Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. In fact I think I’ve only ever seen one Raptor with my own eyes, a personal import. So when I saw this Super Duty thread it really drew me in, because not only am I not used to seeing these trucks, but I’m really interested in watching them get cut up and re-worked. The Cougar House Garage guys sure know how to document their build, with the thread almost being a step-by-step how-to guide. Aside from the obvious reduction in ride height, this truck will also receive a 24 Valve Cummins, converted to a 2wd dually setup, and a whole host of torched and welded metal innards. Considering the tiny stature of the Fiat 850 featured recently, it’s trip to see the difference in scale of the parts that make these things go together.

Revisiting the ETS Drift Ute

Engineered To Slide; there’s a good chance you already follow Nigel’s blog and know all about his impressive two and four wheeled projects, both past and present. When I first started this blog, I launched it with a handful of builds already published from the get-go, and one of those was the ETS S13 Silvia, knowing that I just had to include something from his stable when I launched Build Threads.  A couple of years later I was super excited to see his new project taking shape – a scratch-built Toyota Hilux with Nissan S15 running gear – and just had to make a post about it when it wasn’t yet much more than a mockup. After many updates and blog posts over the span of a few years, I had absorbed every image and every word Nigel had posted about his one-off creation. Now here we are, years later, and it’s still just as impressive as it was when it was first completed. Nigel has just posted a retrospective post on the journey with 100 images of his choice, a perfect opportunity to re-live the build…

Fiat 850 Abarth Replica

There are some cars that just blast their way straight into the cockles of my heart. I’m not sure why, but they always tend to be old Fiats and Alfa Romeos, and if you add the word Abarth, you can bet it’s going to take the direct route. It might have something to do with this image and the effect it’s had on me ever since I first saw it. Anyhoo, this little rear engined corner-carver has an interesting tale, starting out as a Serbian Zastava 750 , before receiving a complete rebuild and being reborn as a very convincing Fiat 850 Abarth replica. The restoration is surgical-grade, and ends in a truly hand-built, brand new condition finished product.

AWE Tuning Headquarters

If you’ve followed the previous garages I’ve featured, you’d notice a theme. I tend to like the ‘everyday’ car-guy garage, something a bit gritty with used cabinets, reclaimed timber, all the warm and fuzzies etc etc. But I always say that it’s nice to see how things are on the top end of the spectrum, and that’s exactly where this brand new workshop belonging to AWE Tuning lies. Holy moly!

Firebug Subaru 360

It’s time for another memory test. Who remembers the rear-engine V6-swapped Geo Metro Lemons racer that was featured almost 5 years ago? Well, the same guys are back again with a new death trap, this time a Subaru 360 micro-car packing a Honda Fireblade bike engine (sadly no longer eligible due to new rules implemented mid-build). I present to you, the Firebug!

Honda NSX Track Car

It’s time to kick off 2016 with a new build! The Honda NSX is a bucket-list car for many people, whether you’re a Honda fanboy, a lover of 90’s JDM, or maybe you have a case of the feels from the original Need for Speed game. This one takes quite the transformation, starting off as a stock automatic it quickly gets torn down and receives a track-ready overhaul. Huge brakes, wide-body, carbon panels, flat floor, air jacks, intricate roll cage with floor bars, bespoke centre exit exhaust, and plenty more. Towards the end of the thread we learn that a HPD LeMans-style engine looks to be in the car’s future, with a couple of turbos to really get things moving, I can’t wait to see how that turns out!

Top 10 Posts of 2015

I’m back after having a little break over the Christmas/New Year period, so I’d like to thank you for your patience during the down-time, and hope everyone had a great end to the year. I’m feeling refreshed and ready for another great year of builds! I thought I’d throw together a quick post to get things moving, showing what were the most popular builds of the last twelve months, according to the stats…

10. 1962 Ford Falcon 2.3 Turbo
Aside from the exceptionally cool car and unique engine choice, this build was a delight to read due to not only the car and work surrounding it, but also the owners own anecdotes that were well-writen with a great amount of humour.

9. GT3 Powered Porsche 962 Replica
A classic endurance racer replica being built in a garage, complete with a slathering of CNC machined parts? It’s not hard to see why this one mad the top 10. With a GT3 road-car being used as a donor, it’s builds like this that give us all that “maybe I can do that” feeling of enthusiasm.

8. Peugot 106 Hillclimb build
From an iconic vintage race car to a humble little hatchback, it doesn’t matter what the base car is on Build-Threads.com, and this just proves it. This Pug is being built to a high calibre by it’s owner, with updates still being posted in the thread as recently as the last few days.

7. Makela Ferrari 308 GTB Group 4
I’ve featured the goings-on of Makela before, but when I re-discovered the complete build of their 308 Ferrari, it just had to be featured on it’s own. From the intense build quality to the incredibly retro brown stripe livery, everything about this car is spot-on.

6. Project Thunderbolt LS3 Miata
One thing I pushed more of this year was video builds, especially with the What I’m Watching series of posts. That didn’t stop me from featuring complete video builds on their own, and Tom’s Miata proved to be a hit with everyone. It wasn’t hard to see why, as Tom’s Turbo Garage is one of the best in the business when it comes to documenting builds via moving image. I can’t wait to see what he brings us next.

5. Project Ugly Horse
With my affinity for Fox Body Mustangs more than obvious, Project Ugly Horse was a shoe-in for a feature. This one differed from the usual forum-based builds, as it was housed on a various automotive blogs, so the writing and images were above par. Sadly, after bouncing around from blog to blog, the project has trailed off into the distance without any recent updates.

4. The World of Sakurama
The only non-car build to make the list, Sakurama’s garage and house build are what dreams are made of. Mid-century modern architecture, professional photography, attention to detail, and a few motorbike builds thrown in for good measure. Some new up-to-date photos have recently been posted in the thread, just incase you were wanting an update.

3. Ferrari F40 LM Restoration (Part 5)
The fifth installment of this series just scraped it in, being posted right at the beginning of 2015, so it was always going to make the list. The F40 LM build as a whole has lit up the stats on this site, constantly being linked on forums and websites everywhere, so I will forever be grateful for the owner giving me permission to re-post the whole build here. If you’re feeling game and want to read all 5 parts again, you can find the index by clicking here.

2. Mk1 Caddy 24v AWD Turbo
I was very happy to see a local car make the list. There aren’t many Mk1 Caddy’s that made it to Australia in the first place, so to see one torn apart like this is even more impressive. A VR6 conversion with an all-wheel-drive swap will certainly wake up this little ute when it’s complete, and with the owner recently renting out a workspace I’m hopeful that the updates will be coming soon.

1. RAMPAGE – 2nd Gen Camaro
Topping off the list is one of my personal favourites, the Rampage Camaro. This build blurs the lines between muscle cars, pro touring, hot rods and race cars. Every image in the thread shows masterpieces of metal fabrication. My love for the Roadster Shop is obvious, as I believe they are not only one of the best car builders in the world, but also one of the best at actually documenting and sharing their work with the world, which is what you and I both love. I’m confident that we’ll be seeing more of the Roadster Shop’s builds right here in 2016.

What I’m Watching: Holiday Edition

Merry Christmas everyone! With it being the holiday season, things might slow down around here a little bit more than usual. I’ve been enjoying some much needed R&R, but that hasn’t stopped me reading and viewing some cool content for my own pleasure, because what else would I do on my holidays? So I thought I’d throw together a quick post to showcase a whole bunch of videos I’ve been watching lately from Eastwood, Fifth Gear, MotorHead Magazine, Luke Huxham, The Motorhood (over 10 episodes!), The Fab Forums, Roadkill, Dirt Every Day, Hot Rod Garage, Speed Academy, B is for Build, Red Bull/Mad Mike, Monster Energy/Vaughn Gitten Jnr/Daigo Saito, Project Synchro, Adam Carolla, That Dude in Blue, Giaco Whatever, Brain Dead Media, and Mighty Car Mods. Phew! Finally got there in the end.

See you in the new year!

Build-Threads Project Garage: Plumbing & Driveway

Has it really been over a year since my last post about the then-completed Build Threads garage? I’m actually a bit stunned at that fact. I wish I could tell you that I’ve been cutting, grinding, and welding my days and nights away, but the truth is I’m still a little ways away from being able to do that. Let’s catch up with what’s been going on and why I’m not quite there yet.

Subaru Leone EJ22T AWD

Sure, you could buy yourself an STi Impreza, but where’s the fun in that? What about taking an all original, low-milage 1986 Subaru Leone, converted to AWD thanks to an XT6 (Vortex) donor, with an engine consisting of a built EJ22T bottom end and STi Version 8 Type RA heads? Yeah, I’d choose the Leone too. The initial build is done and dusted quite quickly, but the car continues to evolve throughout the thread. Unfortunately it meets a guard rail towards the end, but is thankfully repaired swiftly and with OEM parts back to better than new condition.

Thanks to Rodd and Tom for both submitting separately. Click here for more Subaru builds.
