Makela Ferrari 308 GTB Group 4

If you haven’t heard of Makela Auto Tuning before, allow me the honour of introducing you to the Finnish gods of auto restoration. They specialise in ex-Works rally and race cars, and like to document their work in galleries with hundreds (if not thousands!) of images. This isn’t the first time I’ve featured their work, you can read about a bunch of their projects by clicking here. Since it’s been a while between drinks, I thought I’d show you this fantastic restoration of a Ferrari 308 GTB rally car. Oh, there’s only 1764 images of the build. Yes, you read that right, over ONE THOUSAND images.

What I’m Watching: Bamse’s Turbo Underpants

When Bamse was asked what the difference was between normal underpants and turbo underpants, his response was “the skidmarks are bigger”. Who can argue with that? Despite these videos being in Finnish, there’s no subtitles needed for the amount of rev-limiter bashing, exhaust popping, tyre frying burnouts that you’ll see. These guys are very entertaining, you get a real sense of comradery from the group from how they all band together to work on cars and just hang out with each other. Season one starts off with Bamse’s first Volvo nearing completion, then being thrashed at Gatebil for a few days. Season two and three revolve around the build of a new chassis (an older Volvo) which some parts from the previous car, but with a newer and much more serious engine build.

Mercedes W124 500E

I was getting a few hits from Datsun Nissan Sports Cars of Finland Forums, so as usual I followed the link and found myself in a thread on their forum. This happens all the time, so I try to make a point of seeing if I can find anything to feature while I’m there. Luckily, there was another link in the same thread to the project you’re about to see here.

This build is spearheaded by Stefan who’s piecing together a super-touring styled Mercedes W124 500E, complete with a carbon fiber wide-body and plenty of CAD-drawn/CNC machined parts.

Mäkelä Auto Tuning Projects

Every now and then, someone will submit a build that has already been featured, but it is far from a wasted effort as it can open up an opportunity for another story. Jani-Matti from Finland email me a build from Mäkelä Auto Tuning previously featured here, the immaculate restoration of a Group B Toyota Celica rally car. Even though I had already featured that particular build, I had another look at the site and remembered that MAT have more than one intricate build on the go.

Keep reading below and you will find a list of the projects documented in their galleries. I have listed all of them instead of releasing each one as separate features. Does this mean I can take a couple of weeks off now? Didn’t think so 🙁

MAT is truly at the top-end of the car restoration spectrum. Not only are their builds pure quality, but they also take the time to create and update a clean and informative website complemented with superb photography.

The KidVRod

What happens when you’re a 4 year old kid with a father who loves aircooled VW’s and knows how to weld? Well, you get your very own scaled down version of a VRod, of course!

Possibly the coolest dad in the world, Kristian from Finland transforms a regular Beetle shell into the baddest fully functioning kid-car going around for his lucky son.

1984 Toyota Celica Group B Restoration

Yet another famous build that did the internet rounds a while ago, this time it’s a Group B rally car that gets the attention of some master craftsmen. Everything on this car has been restored to as-new condition with meticulous detail, right down to hand painted dials on the gauges. It is a restoration of truly biblical proportions, definitely one of the most impressive builds on the internet to date, lots of fabrication and hand formed metal to inspire you.
