1UZFE 1986 MKII Supra

What can I say about builds like these? High quality mods, high quality images, and high quality documentation, everything we all love in a thread, steered by my favourite kind of builder; one with OCD! Another thing I love about this particular build is watching the owner’s skills progress and improve as time goes on. The choice of car is something we haven’t seen on the site before, we’ve had Supra’s, but never a MKII, so it’s refreshing to read about a platform that can sometimes go unnoticed within the nostalgic Japanese community. There’s so much quality here, from fiberglassing, wiring, welding and CAD design – and over 50 pages of it – so get comfortable!

1/4 Scale running V8 engine

EDIT: There are a lot of comments and emails asking me about pricing and availability of these engines. I have absolutely no affiliation with them at all, nor do I know how to get one or if they are even able to purchased. If you would like more information, you will have to follow the build thread and contact the owner/builder through the forum. Thank you.

For the last scale build I featured, I mentioned how it stepped things up from the one featured previous to that. We went from a completely plastic and resin model to one with milled aluminium and brass parts. Well here we are again, in the realm of small scale building, and at the risk of sounding repetitive I’m going to tell you that this one steps it up another notch from the last one. Well, “a” notch probably doesn’t sum it up quite adequately, when we’re talking about a complete RUNNING 1/4 scale V8 with fuel injection. Make sure you see the video at the bottom of the post. Simply amazing, and I can’t wait to see the builders next project, a scale V10.

Mustegra – DC2 Integra / 96 Mustang

This build doesn’t start off with a bare shell, a neglected car found under a tree, or even anything remotely standard, it actually starts off with a Honda Integra that had already been featured in a magazine. So how can a build start off with an already complete car? Well, because the guts of the Honda gets removed and fitted atop a ’96 Mustang Cobra, creating a V8, RWD Integra. The interesting thing to note is that the owners inspiration for this build was actually the Civette, another Honda chassis swap that graced these pages.

’69 Chevelle / ’99 Nascar chassis

What better way to update your classic Chevelle than by sliding a modern Nascar chassis underneath it? Sounds easy, right? Well for some people it is, like Doug, who set out to create his ultimate ’69 Chevelle after never quite getting over the loss of his first one back in the mid 80’s. The fond memories of a first car seem to always stick with us, no matter what the make or model.

Ferrari F40 LM Restoration Part 1

Could this be the holy grail? The best car ever featured on Build-Threads.com? For those of you who are keen followers of the Facebook page, you’d be well aware that I’m quite the Ferrari tragic, and that as far as supercars go, I’d have a hard time deciding between an F40 or a Lamborghini Miura (if the opportunity ever happened to arise). I’m that much of a tragic, in fact, that I signed up to Ferrari Chat a long time ago just so I could view images that are restricted to members. This build comes from that very forum, but I’m not about to make you sign up to view it. Instead, I have personally asked the owner of this car, Tim, for his permission to re-post the entire thread on these very pages, and thankfully he said yes. I think this build is so incredible that it should be shared with a greater audience, so I’d like to thank Tim for allowing me to post it here.

This F40 is listed as Chassis No 84326, and was rotting away in a garage for 8 years before Tim snapped it up and sought about having it brought back to better than it’s former glory. This isn’t a made-for-TV hack job, this is a no-expense-spared restoration of one of the greatest supercars of all time. I’m so used to seeing F40’s in their finished guise, carefully polished with gleaming paintwork, but to see one in various states of undress has given me a whole new appreciation for both the shape and the engineering behind it. I hope you enjoy this build as much as I have…

LSX E39 BMW Wagon

Every now and then I’ll waffle on about what makes a good build thread. My list of requirements usually includes nice photography, good writing, quality modifications, and the ability to tell a story. Well this is one of those threads, and I can always tell when I really like one because reading it isn’t a chore, it’s a pleasure that I never want to end, no matter how many pages I click through. The owner, Brandon, says goodbye to his very clean M52 turbo powered E34 525i and then sets out to build a manual LSX powered E39 wagon, documenting the build with images that look like they’ve been plucked straight out of a catalogue. When you see his collection of previous rides, you realise he’s one of those people who have a kind of midas touch when it comes to cars, knowing how to show restraint and refine a car with carefully chosen improvements, no matter what the make, model or era.

Bagged Porsche Dually

Not the kind of title you’d see every day, right? After overwhelming feedback on the Facebook page, I bring you this very unique piece of machinery. What was originally a Porsche 911 is now merely a Stuttgart shell sitting atop a Chevy pickup dually chassis, with a 454 V8 and 4-speed, riding on air. The build isn’t finished, the thread goes cold after just over 2 pages. If anyone knows what ever happened to this thing, please let me know!

VH41 V8 airbagged Cedric

There’s really no introduction I can type up for this car that will do it justice, so I’m just going to give you the facts, because they’re way more impressive than anything I could muster up. Nissan/Datsun Cedric, VH41 V8 conversion, custom-made cast ITB’s with carbon velocity stacks, airbags on all 4 corners with tubular crossmembers and arms, 4 link rear end, and some of my favourite oldschool JDM rims; August Feroce’s. Oh man, I’m getting a cold sweat just thinking about it. It’s also gracing the cover of the June 2013 issue of NZ Performance Car Magazine.

Thanks to Nils for submitting, who also submitted the K20 1st Gen Civic.

1969 AMX

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I love seeing pictures of cars that are in various stages of assembly, even more than the finished item. I just love seeing that raw metal, with missing panels showing off the mechanical underpinnings, the car sitting low to the ground with an abundance of tyre tread on display due to lack of guards/fenders, and the combination of factory parts with hand-made additions. It’s that very love of tough-looking yet incomplete cars that drew me to this build, with it’s “minimal metal/maximum tyre” appearance. The builder of this AMX has actually graced these pages before, being the man behind the $5,000 budget Mustang (another great thread for those of you who’ve never seen it).
